A week in San Francisco, a lovely place with lovely people.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was our las

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was our last major non-city stop on our recent trip around the Great Lakes region. We had visited a couple other dune/beachy areas on this trip and expected more of the same, but we were pleasantly surprised by the diversity of landscape here. The large dunes are definitely a highlight, but the forested campgrounds, cute downtown area, historic farms, and scenic drives make this park a real destination. And we got there in time to check out the annual salmon run along the Platte River, a fun sight to behold.

When we came down into the Lower Peninsula of Mich

When we came down into the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, aka The Mitten, the rainy weather we had tried to avoid on Mackinac continued. We took the opportunity to pop into a sampling of the myriad wineries, breweries, and distilleries in the area around the Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas. Lighthouses, rustic beaches, historic fishing villages, something called mushroom houses(???), delicious food and copious libations - what more could you want? Maybe a little sun, but we definitely made the best of it.

We had heard good things about it, but as we neare

We had heard good things about it, but as we neared Mackinac Island in Upper Michigan the weather wasn’t looking great. We did our best to time our visit to the island with a break in the rain, but we failed. Ten minutes after we rented some bikes to make our way around the outer loop road, the rain started coming down and it didn’t let up. We rode the 8 miles around the island getting thoroughly soaked, just in time for the sun to peak out as we re-entered the main downtown area. We got some food and dried out, bought some delicious fudge, and had a drink before heading back to the mainland, chilled, tired, and ready to call it a day’s misadventure.
